Winter Roofing Check List

With October coming to a close, Winter is lurking in the shadows. The snow is not here yet, but the days are quickly getting shorter and colder. In New England, it can and has snowed as early as October. While it appears safe to say that will not happen this year, it can never hurt to be prepared and snow in November is not uncommon. Here are the most important things to check off to make sure your roof is ready for Winter.

Assess How Your Roof Is Looking

The most important aspect on your roof’s to-do list this Fall is inspecting your roof closely. If you are comfortable using a ladder and going on top of your roof, look for any cracks, damages, or missing roof shingles. This will indicate whether or not your roof is in good standing. If you notice any flaws with your roof, do not avoid repairs or replacements.

Consider Cutting Down Trees/Branches

Many trees and tree branches hover over many homes in New England. In years past, trees and tree branches have fallen on the roof of homes, causing severe damage. If you believe a nearby tree or hovering tree branches can fall and impact your roof, seek to get it removed as soon as possible.

Clear The Debris

Most homeowners probably have not checked out their roofs all year. This gives your roof plenty of time to accumulate debris on its rooftops. If you notice significant debris on your roof, you can either use a leaf blower or manually sweep the debris off your roof. Hanging debris on your rooftop will not do it any good come wintertime so it is best to clean up your roof before snow season arrives.

Do Not Neglect Gutter Maintenance

Your gutter and roof work in tandem, it is like a partnership that goes hand in hand. How your treat and maintain your gutter will have a trickle-down effect on your roof. If your gutter is poorly maintained and not clean, it can do damage to your roof. For example, having water backed up or a clogged gutter will apply more pressure to your roof and make it susceptible.
