Spring is almost here in New England which means the snow that has covered your roof all winter has melted or will be melting shortly. With warm weather comes the ability to properly assess your roof’s health. If you believe that your home is in need of a roof replacement or repairs this spring, take a look at our guide to learn what signs to look out for.
Leaves and Pine Needles
If your roof is covered in leaves and needles, you will need to remove them to help prevent damage to your roof. If there is just a few leaves and pine needles here and there, you’ll have nothing to worry about. However, if there is a thick mat of leaves and needles on your roof, you will need to remove them to ensure that your roof is able to shed the moisture they trap. If you allow them to sit on your roof, it could lead to moisture damage on either your shingles or your roof deck.
Tree Limbs
Ensure that you don’t have any tree limbs hanging over your home. If they are sitting on your roof, they could easily scrap granules off of your shingles as they sway back and forth in the wind, which will significantly shorten your shingles lifespans. Furthermore, if the branches break, they could end up damaging your home’s roof.
Gutter Damage
Make sure you examine your gutters when the snow melts. During the winter, ice dams form in your gutters and along the edge of your roof. The weight of these ice dams can damage your gutter system, causing them to crack and leading to water running down your home’s siding. In addition to assessing whether or not the gutter system is still sealed, you will also need to ensure that your gutters are cleaned out so water can travel through the system without being forced over the sides or backing up.
Missing/Damaged Shingles
Finally, ensure that you examine the shingles themselves to ensure that you’re not missing any shingles or that they’re not damaged or falling off of your roof. If you have any sections of missing or damaged shingles, be sure to have your roof repaired so you don’t accrue any water damage to your roof deck or the frame of your home.
