Your gutter system is one of the most overlooked, but important, portions of your home’s exterior. Ensuring that your gutters system is kept in good repair is essential for the health of your home, meaning it’s important to examine your system for imperfections and structural integrity. If you’re interested in learning more about the signs that your gutter system needs to be replaced, take a look at our blog to learn about the signs you may have missed!
Your System Is Cracked, Rusted, Or Broken
While a few small holes and cracks can be patched with caulking or another sealant, if your system is littered with imperfections, you will need to replace your home’s gutter system in order to keep your home’s siding and roofing system perfected.
Separated Gutter System
Another clear sign that your gutter system needs to be replaced is when your gutter sections are detaching from one another. If your gutter system is breaking apart, it will not be able to transport water to your downspouts, and away from your home. Instead, it will simply allow water to fall down your home’s siding where it can cause damage around the foundation of your home. If your gutter system’s pieces are separating from one another, replace the system as soon as possible.
Gutters Falling Away From Roof & Broken Fasteners
If you notice that your entire gutter system is falling away from your home, it is likely that either your fasteners are breaking off, or your home’s fascia board is rotting and not holding the fasteners in place. If you find that your fasteners are no longer keeping your gutter system in place, you will need to replace your system, and possibly your fascia boards if they are rotted, in order to keep your home protected from water damage.
Peeling Paint
Another issue that you will often find underneath poorly maintained gutter systems is paint that is peeling off of the siding below the gutters. As water drips down behind your gutter system, it deteriorates the paint due to repeated exposure to dripping water in the same area. If you find that the paint under your leaking gutter system is peeling, you will need to replace your gutter system as it has been leaking for a long time.
Flooding In Basement Or Landscaping
Finally, if you find that your basement is flooding or your landscaping below your gutters is washing away, you will need to replace your gutter system. If your gutter system is no longer working properly, it will allow water to spill over the sides and fall at the base of your home, rather than moving through your downspouts and being redirected away from the home. If you find that your basement has been flooded or the mulch around your flower beds continues to wash away, replace ensure that your gutter system isn’t leaking, and be sure to replace it if it is!
