As we continue through the hot and dry summer months, you might think that you do not need to worry about your gutters. However, this season is the ideal time of year to do a full inspection of the gutters and make sure there are no major issues you need to address. Before the rains and leaves of fall begin, you should give your gutters a thorough summer checkup.
Here are a few tips to help you keep your gutters in great shape throughout the summer and into the fall:
- Remove any debris. When looking over your gutters, the first thing you will need to do is get rid of any debris, such as bird nests, leaves and sticks that have built up over the course of the year. You want the gutters to be clear of any remnants of last fall, so they will be able to function properly and drain water away from the house in the future.
- Look for signs of damage. After you have finished cleaning away the debris, you will be able to take a closer look at the gutters for any indications of damage. Rusted areas, holes and sagging spots will all need to be repaired as quickly as possible. You should also weigh the possibility of having the damaged gutters entirely replaced.
- Install new equipment. If your gutters are broken to the point where they can no longer function properly, they will need to be replaced. Summer is the perfect time to get this project completed, as it is dry enough that you will not face any particularly harsh weather-related obstacles. This will greatly reduce your fall gutter maintenance jobs.
