Unfortunately, there are contractors out there who try to take advantage of people that need work done on their homes. These scams can often be hard to spot, and by the time you realize what has happened, it’s too late. If you’re interested in learning more about how you can spot a roofing scam, take a look at our blog for more information!
Storm Chasers
This is one of the most publicized roofing scams, but it can be easy to fall for. A “storm chaser” is a roofer that follows the weather reports and sees which areas have recently been hit by hail or high winds. They will go to these towns, handing out their cards and going door-to-door looking for homeowners that they can convince to replace their roof. They know that insurance companies will be willing to give money to homeowners due to the damage, so they come into town to replace as many roofs as possible before leaving. The quality of work is usually poor, and you’ll need your home’s roof replaced around 5 years later, making it a waste of your time and money. These scammers will try to take advantage of the storm damage, telling you that you need your roof replaced now. In order to spot a storm chaser, it’s important to be wary of anyone coming up to your door and cold pitching you a new roof. You can also ask to see their insurance or check their roofing license. If something feels like it’s off, it probably is!
No Free Inspections
Most professional roofers will offer free consultations to interested clients. If your roofer demands down payments for an inspection, that is usually a sign that your roofer is going to scam you. If the roofer is unwilling to give you a free estimate, that’s usually a sign that they’re going scam you!
Low Estimates
Another clear sign of a roofing scam is when a roofer gives you an estimate that is far lower than the rest of the competition. If your roofer tells you that the replacement will cost half as much as what the other contractors said, they’re simply trying to lock you into a contract before they drop the extra and supposedly unforeseen fees on you.
